Why does darker skin require real clinical experience?
A diode laser targets pigment (melanin) inside the hair shaft and bulb. In olive, brown, and dark skin tones, there is also a higher natural concentration of melanin in the epidermis. The key to safe and effective treatment is adjusting pulse duration and fluence so that thermal energy disables the hair follicle while keeping the surrounding skin completely safe. This cannot be done on generic presets — it requires hands-on experience and careful assessment before treatment.
At Depiclinic in Warsaw Mokotów, we have been treating clients across all skin complexions for years and consider it one of our core specialities. Every series begins with a skin assessment and a patch test, so you know exactly how your skin reacts before starting full sessions.
Lumenis LightSheer Duet and Fitzpatrick phototypes I–VI
We work exclusively on four original Lumenis LightSheer Duet diode lasers operating at a wavelength of 805 nm. The device is clinically approved for all Fitzpatrick skin phototypes — from I to VI. On larger body areas we use the High Speed vacuum-assist handpiece, and on smaller or sensitive areas we use the precision handpiece with a sapphire ChillTip™ that actively cools the skin surface before, during, and after each pulse.
In dermatology and cosmetology, your Fitzpatrick phototype describes how your skin responds to ultraviolet light and how much melanin it naturally holds — from very fair skin that always burns (phototype I) to deeply pigmented skin that rarely burns (phototype VI). It is your skin phototype and hair pigment that determine laser settings.
Free consultation, patch test, and sun exposure rules
Every treatment series at Depiclinic starts with a free consultation and a laser patch test. Our cosmetologist assesses your skin phototype and hair structure, checks for any medications or contraindications, and performs test pulses on a small area. Only after verifying your skin’s response do we select the parameters for your session.
An important distinction: a naturally dark or olive complexion is never a contraindication, whereas a fresh suntan is. Any body area scheduled for laser hair removal must be protected from direct sun exposure for at least 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after each session, using clothing and SPF 50+ sunscreen.
Relief from ingrown hairs and razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae)
Curly or coarse hair in olive, brown, and dark skin complexions is particularly prone to curling back into the epidermis after shaving or waxing — causing painful ingrown hairs, razor bumps (pseudofolliculitis barbae), and post-inflammatory dark spots on the bikini line, legs, underarms, neck, and beard contour.
Because the 805 nm Lumenis LightSheer Duet diode laser disables the hair bulb inside the follicle, the hair shaft stops regrowing and the skin can finally heal without constant mechanical irritation from razors or wax.
